Transport and Getting Around at Schoolies
Walking
- If you've been drinking, walk with a group of friends.
- It's not always safe to walk by yourself after you've been drinking as your vision, judgement and coordination will be affected.
- Stay on the footpath. If there's no footpath and it's safe to do so, walk to the right of the road facing towards passing traffic as far away from passing vehicles as possible.
Public Transport
- Buying an electronic transport top-up card where available - they'll make catching public transport easier and faster, and will usually save you money. They're available in some cities Schoolies is in such as Queensland's go card on the Gold Coast and areas of the Sunshine Coast.
- Get to know the public transport information phone numbers and websites so you can check timetable information on your phone.
- Plan your route before you head out so you aren't waiting at bus stops at night for too long.
- Don't fall asleep on public transport. You increase the risk of having your wallet, handbag or other items stolen - not to mention the risk of missing your stop.

Taxis
- Try to catch taxis in a group.
- Even with most taxis being fitted with cameras and GPS tracking, be conscious of your surroundings. Trust your instincts. If you don't feel safe, ask to be let out somewhere safe like a service station, police station public place with many people.
Driving
- Avoid getting into cars with people you've only just met.
- If you've been drinking, don't drive - it's not safe. Police will be out in force during Schoolies. It's quite likely there will be lots of random alcohol and drug tests. Drink drivers will get caught.
- Don't get into a car with someone who has been drinking.
- The same goes for drugs - they impair your vision and make driving very dangerous.
- Don't use a mobile phone while driving - even when stopped at traffic lights.
- If you're on a learner or provisional license - remember you must have zero blood and breath alcohol concentration.
- Avoid driving if you're tired, especially after you've been partying. Even if you don't feel very tired, early in the morning you risk falling into micro sleeps which can lead to a loss of concentration for only a few seconds - but can cause fatal accidents. Rest for a while until it's safe or take alternative transport.
- Ensure all your passengers are correctly seated and are wearing their seatbelts.
