Choosing the best function venue
If you need somewhere to host your next function like a birthday celebration or other special event, here are some tips to make choosing the right venue that little bit easier:
To pay or not to pay?
Some venues will provide spaces free of charge - expecting to make money back off drinks they sell; some will charge you a booking fee that can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars; while others may require a minimum spend for your guests - which may involve paying a bar tab in advance. What you get for your money might just cover the function space, or could include catering, a private DJ or even a private bar area.
Guest numbers & invites
Plan how many guests you expect and how best to control who gets into your private function area - the venue might have their own policies, or expect you to arrange a guest list, invites or distribute wrist bands.
Drinks
Check out the drinks and bar facilities on offer. If your guests are getting a drink as part of a pre-paid bar tab, plan how you'll control how drinks are allocated.
Music & lighting
Some venue function spaces might provide you with your own private DJ - or let you bring in your own. Check with the venue - and if you're arranging your own DJ, get them in early to check out the setup.
Location
Having a venue in the right location can make or break a party. Choose a location that has the right kind of vibe for your event, and is easily accessible to public transport, taxis and parking.
Dress codes
Be sure to tell your guests the venue's dress code in advance.
Plan early
Event spaces can book out quickly, so start looking early so you have enough time to find and book the perfect venue on the right day.
