What Gangnam Style's all about
Gangnam Style, by South Korean rapper Psy (actual name: Park, Jae-sang), has become a viral hit on YouTube, bringing in over 330 million views and topping music charts around the world including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Europe.
Gangnam Style shot to fame thanks to the viral success of the music video and its comical horse-riding dance which has created the latest craze to sweep across dancefloors. The song's classified as K-pop, and has elements of euro-trash, techno, underground production and humour.
'Gangname Style' refers to the posh lifestyle in South Korea's Gangnam district (Seoul), where people are considered trendy, hip, and exude a certain "swag". The music video shows several "random" shots of the district. Psy uses a twisted sense of humour in the song since people actually living in the Gangnam district never proclaim they are, but only "posers" and "wannabes" say they're 'Gangnam Style'.
Gangnam Style talks about the perfect girlfriend who knows when to act "proper" and when to act "wild".
Industry sources estimate that Gangnam Style generated over $1 million from YouTube alone, and Psy has recently scored several deals to appear in commercials, with each deal being worth around $275,000.
The song's been out since July 2012 and is considered one of the first Asian pop songs to reach a mainstream pop audience on such a large scale.
